About Musk Ming (Muskboy)

Musk Ming was born in China, since 2005 the young Chinese artist has lived and worked in Berlin.

Musk Ming (Muskboy) looks for a way to combine the old Chinese traditional art with the modern, new technique. His art comes from the deep, ancient soul of China and his love to his fatherland. He sees through different eyes of various cultures. By his way of erotica, the observer would be under the spell and feels the fascination of his models. So it makes a sensual atmosphere, but without obscenity.

Musk Ming's works visualise the longing for an open-minded gay bi les transgender - friendly China. Unfortunately exposing any explicit homo- and or transsexuality in Arts within present Chinese culture is prohibited. He stresses that sexual liberalism and tolerance are a historical part of Chinese culture, not a "new captalist idea" from the western world.

He criticizes the lack of personal freedom and artistic expression of the Chinese LGTBQ community. He progagates a return to Taoist values as a tolerant alternative. Beating the communists with their own aesthetics, Musk Ming masterfully appropriates the saccharine Maoist propaganda illustration style to explore the ancient gay tradition of China.

Ming's painting of athletes, "Go West", was chosen to take part in the official art exhibition accompanying the Olypmpic Games in Beijing(Olympic Fine Arts 2008). But the artist was forced by the Chinese authorities to remove the painting from the show shortly before its opening.

To safeguard himself, his beloved family and his befriended pioneering gay bi les and transsexual community against the arbitrariness of Chinese authorities the artist prefers his pseudonym Musk Ming.

The word “musk” (“She Xiang” in Chinese) is a luxurious perfume and traditional Chinese medicine. And “Ming” is the infant name of the artist given by his grandmother as he was born in the bright morning after a snow stormy night.
